Edge Systems LLC v. Cartessa Aesthetics, LLC — Fed. Cir. (argued September 8, 2026)
The Federal Circuit considers whether Cartessa's Skinwave skincare machine infringes Edge Systems' U.S. Patent No. 9,550,052. The patent claims a console that can select among treatment-fluid containers and send fluid through a manifold to a handheld applicator. The district court found the patent not invalid but granted Cartessa summary judgment of noninfringement. Edge says the court had to decide what "manifold" means and that its photo and expert evidence create a jury question. Cartessa says Edge asked for ordinary meaning and still offered no evidence of the device's internal fluid path. The appeal asks whether the court wrongly skipped claim construction or properly found Edge's proof insufficient. Cartessa also cross-appeals the invalidity ruling, but the questioning centers on noninfringement.
