The Ninth Circuit hears a Social Security disability benefits appeal. The claimant sought benefits, the agency denied the claim, and that denial is now being challenged in federal court. One part of the disability assessment is whether a person with the claimant's limitations can do other work that exists in significant numbers in the national economy. Vocational experts provide information about the jobs a person could perform and how many such jobs exist. That helps explain why estimates of available jobs can matter to a benefits claim.
