Juliet Charron v. WPATH — 7th Cir. (Oct 26, 2026)
The Seventh Circuit hears a document dispute arising from an Idaho Medicaid lawsuit. Transgender Idaho residents challenged restrictions on coverage for gender-affirming care. Their case relies on standards issued by WPATH, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. To defend the policy, Idaho subpoenaed the organization for records about those standards. WPATH asked an Illinois federal court to limit the demand, citing burden and its members' rights. This appeal concerns discovery, the process of obtaining evidence, rather than the legality of the care policy itself. The lawyers distinguish producing records from authenticating copies: showing that they are what they claim to be. They also discuss spoliation, the loss or destruction of evidence that should have been preserved. Michael Zarian represents Idaho's health department director.
