Teamsters Local 135 v. City of Shelbyville — 7th Cir. (argued September 14, 2026)

The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit hears Teamsters Local Union 135 v. City of Shelbyville. Dealers at Horseshoe Indianapolis began a strike seeking union recognition after a federal government shutdown postponed their scheduled union election. They picketed in areas along North Michigan Road until Shelbyville police ordered them to leave as trespassers. The union sued the city and its police chief, claiming that the First Amendment and federal labor law protected picketing there. A district judge denied a preliminary injunction, finding that the disputed areas were private casino property, had no history as a public forum, and were not shielded from trespass enforcement by the National Labor Relations Act. The appeal asks whether that ruling was wrong—and, because the election later occurred, whether enough of the dispute remains alive to decide.
