Robert Panton v. Todd W. Blanche — 7th Cir. (Oct 26, 2026)
The Seventh Circuit hears Robert Panton's immigration appeal. Panton spent nearly thirty years in prison for a drug conviction before a federal judge reduced his life sentence in 2020. But release from criminal custody did not resolve his immigration case: that conviction also exposed him to removal to Jamaica. You'll hear about a U visa, which offers temporary legal status to certain crime victims who help law enforcement. A waiver of inadmissibility excuses a legal barrier to entry; it does not itself grant a visa. Another key term is equitable tolling: a filing deadline may be paused when extraordinary circumstances prevent timely action despite diligent efforts. As you listen, distinguish sending a case back for an agency to reconsider from deciding that someone is entitled to immigration relief.
