United States, Appellant v. Rodney Taylor — 11th Cir. (Sep 30, 2026)
The Eleventh Circuit hears a federal sentencing appeal. A jury convicted Rodney Taylor of illegally possessing a gun and ammunition. At sentencing, the judge found that he had used that gun in a killing. His prior convictions also triggered the Armed Career Criminal Act, and he received life in prison. More than twenty years later, a district judge ruled that a Florida marijuana conviction no longer counted under that Act and reduced his sentence to thirty years. The government appeals. Can compassionate release account for this legal development, or must Taylor use the separate process for challenging a sentence?
