Helmig v. Board of Regents of the University of Colorado — 10th Cir. (Sep 17, 2026)

The Tenth Circuit hears Detlev Helmig's appeal over his firing from the University of Colorado. He worked as an atmospheric scientist at CU Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research before the university terminated him in 2020. The university cited alleged conflict-of-interest and fiscal-ethics violations; Helmig disputes those accusations. He sued, saying university policies gave him a fixed-term appointment and a chance to be heard before termination. The district court ruled for the university without a trial, finding he had no protected right to continued employment. The appeal turns on whether his continued work and the research-professor policy made him more than an at-will employee, whose job could otherwise end without cause.
